College of Pet Animal Studies

Behaviour Counselling Level 3

This course is designed for those who have already taken a level two course, either ours or another accredited course, and so understand the basis of pet animal psychology. Proof of prior learning will be accepted if no formal courses have been taken.
The course is completely in line with the Kennels Club’s Accreditation Scheme. This is important, as the Kennel Club’s Scheme is the public’s guarantee of levels of competence in their chosen professionals. Do ask us about this if you are unsure.
There are regular workshops and seminars which may be taken in conjunction with this home study course, but are not compulsory. (Details on the newsletter, or email The College)

Module 1

This module covers the underpinning knowledge required to recognise and treat behavioural problems in pet animals. It deals with understanding the natural, or ‘normal’ behaviours in dogs, cats and parrots, and teaches you how to research the natural behaviour of other pet animals. We take a look at drives and motivations in order to understand behaviours which are natural to the animal, but unacceptable to the owner, and how to deal with these.

Module 2

This module deals with understanding owners, conducting a consultation, information gathering and negotiating an effective programme of behaviour modification. We look at ‘laying out your stall’ so that owners and other professionals are aware of your service. We explore codes of ethics, and your professional responsibilities.

Module 3

This module looks at common case histories of unacceptable behaviour in cats, dogs and parrots. At this point you may elect to study one species only, that is your choice. We also look at common causes of unacceptable behaviours, and common misconceptions of owners.

Special projects in this module may be taken on the species of your choice. In order to graduate from this course, your work must demonstrate sound knowledge and an empathy with owners as well as their pets.
