Puppy Training Course Level 2
How does puppy training vary from the training of adult dogs? With a puppy we are moulding the behaviour we want, and we must be careful not to create problems by confusing or frightening him or her. Training must be fun, simple and gentle. Teaching owners to bring up their puppies is obviously not as simple as one might think, otherwise there would not be so many adult dogs who have attended puppy training and have behaviour problems.
Module One – Behaviour Issues
We shall look at what the puppy learns, and when and where.
We shall look at how the owner behaves in the home in relation to the puppy.
We shall look at how strong, kind leadership qualities can be fostered in the owner.
We shall look at which exercises are helpful, and which are best left for adulthood.
Module Two – Organising Training Activities
Here we shall discuss organising and running group training, both puppy parties and training classes. Home visits are useful for first time dog owners, are useful for family situations. This is where toilet training issues are best addressed.
Module Three – Teaching Owners To Teach The Puppies
We shall look at the various ways we can teach the puppy to:
- Walk on a loose lead
- Come back when called
- Sit and stay
- Lie down and stay
- Leave food alone
- Leave owners property alone
- Retrieve (useful for exercising when time is short)
- Enjoy grooming
- Stand for veterinary examination
- Behave suitably with visitors
- Behave suitably around other dogs
- Behave in the car
This course would be of interest to those wishing to undertake puppy training classes, or one to one training. We always advise that students attend at least one two day course in order to hone practical and teaching skills to professional level.
